In 1971, Richard Johanson—a World War II veteran and author of “A Passion for Stewardship”— founded JTS in Fresno, California, after operating a local transport brokerage business for 15 years. Starting with a workforce of four, crammed into a small leased office at a nearby truck stop, JTS has expanded to more than eighty employees from six offices in four states. Richard’s son, Larry Johanson, began working part-time with JTS in 1972, assisting with administrative and accounting duties. In 1975, he was named to set up the company’s Perishable Division—a goal that he successfully faced, widening the company’s freight base from dry food goods to fresh produce and food products. Working full-time, Larry has transformed the Perishable company into a big revenue-producing entity—all while obtaining his BS degree in Business Administration. When Richard retired in 1989, Larry took the reins of his father and was elected president. For more than 20 years as the company’s boss, Larry Johanson still occupies the title of President/Chief Executive Officer.
Since the company was founded in 1971, the corporate philosophy of the company has been to give back. The corporation supports many of our clients’ charitable organizations and scholarship funds and is active during the year in support of education, causes that support individuals, youth and veterans through financial contributions and sponsorships. Locally, the organization contributed substantial annual contributions to Fresno State Tuition, Fresno Pacific University and Regional Hospital Programs, to name a few. Many of the company’s staff devote their time and money to volunteer at events in their own communities to benefit causes, and JTS supports this campaign by 100 percent.
